Rom was born in New York City. But the values he learned as the son of Catholic immigrants in early 20th-century America have stayed with him. After serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II, Rom married, started a family and joined the Knights of Columbus. Today, he is a member of Our Lady of Grace Council 14765 in South Carolina, where he has lived since 2010 with his daughter, Maryann, and her husband.
